20 Curly Hair Hacks and Tips

  1. Comb hair from the bottom upwards. By starting from the bottom instead of at the top dragging the knots downwards, you are reducing possible damage and breakage.
  2. Use wide-tooth combs or your fingers to detangle, never use a brush or thinly toothed comb.
  3. Detangle hair in the shower. When hair is wet, preferably with conditioner, the hair will be easier and have more slick. Combing dry hair can cause breakage.
  4. Use sulfate free shampoos or cleansing shampoos. These will clean the hair without being too harsh and stripping too much of the natural oils, which can cause dryness.
  5. Scrunch hair and finger twist individual pieces to encourage hair to curl.
  6. Don’t wash hair too often. Washing too often can dry out the hair, causing it to frizz.
  7. Get regular trims to avoid split ends. Healthy hair means more bouncy and beautiful curls.
  8. Wear protective styles. By wearing your hair in protective styles such as buns, braids, etc, can help retain length. Just remember to continuously moisturize your hair.
  9. Don’t completely wash out all of the conditioner when washing your hair. Leaving in some conditioner is great for maintaining moisture in the hair.
  10. Use the “pineapple and wrap your hair to get keep curls defined while you sleep.
  11. Use a T-shirt or a low fibre towel to dry your hair after washing it to prevent frizz, knots, matted curls and tangles.
  12. Use oil after gels to prevent the curls from being crunchy.
  13. To refresh your curls, spray a mixture of water and leave-in conditioner onto the hair. This will add back the moisture and definition.
  14. Apply your products while the hair is wet to get the most defined, frizz-free curls.
  15. Leave your hair alone when it’s drying. Touching your hair while it is wet can cause it to frizz up.
  16. Don’t be afraid to use gel. Gel doesn’t nesseciaily leave your curls crispy, crunch and hard, with the right technique you can achieve juicy, bouncy, soft, defined, and shiny curls.
  17. Second day curls are better than fresh curls. Second day curls are stretched out more, has more volume and usually looks overall better than day 1.
  18. Layer products depending on your hair needs. Conditioner, butters, gel, oil. Find the right combination of products to lock in moisture and hold styles.
  19. Don’t use too many products! Too much product can leave you with stringy and greasy looking curls. Again depending on your type of curls, find the right amount of product to use. Experiment!
  20. Avoid washing your hair on very humid or rainy days. Spray with a mixture of water and leave-in conditioner instead to avoid frizz.
