The Truth about Hair Growth

When it comes to hair growth, many of us have at least once in our lives,  searched for a growth merical. Even though there is no magic pills, there are some things that we can do to promote healthy hair growth. So first lets talk about how hair grows.

Stages of hair growth

Hair grows in three stages. These stages are:

  • Anagen – active growth phase (2-8 years)
  • Catagen – transition phase, the hair stops growing (4-6 weeks)
  • Telogen – resting phase, the hair falls out (2-3 months)

On average most of the hair follicles on the scalp are in the anagen phase. Only about a maximum of 10 percent of the stands are in the telogen phase. This accounts for the around average 100 hairs that you lose everyday.

Factors that affect hair growth

There can be different factors that effect the growth and loss of your hair. These factors include:

  • genetics
  • hormonal changes
  • stress
  • lack of nutrition
  • vitamin deficiency
  • trauma to hair follicles
  • medication
  • other conditions

Tips to Retaining Hair Length

It can’t grow overnight. Hair usually grows at a curtain rate depending on the factors stated above. Sadly, there is nothing that can make it grow from our neck to our tailbone in 2 months. Again… sadly.

Have a consistent hair care routine. A good consistent routine can help keep the hair healthy.

Deep condition treatments. Deep conditioning treatments help to hydrate the hair,  reducing frizz and possible damage.

Get your vitamins and nutrients. Things like zinc deficiency plays a role in hair loss.

Ditch your cotton pillowcase, get a silk pillowcase. Silk is smoother and causes less friction. So this means way less tangles.

A Healthy And Balanced Diet. Healthy bodies are more able to grow healthy hair.

Scalp massages. Massaging the scalp not only feels good but it stimulates blood circulation in the scalp, promoting healthy growth.

Trim Your Hair Regularly. Damaged hair causes thinning, uneven ends and breakage.

Don’t Wash Too Often. This can cause drying in the hair.

Lower Your Stress Levels. Too much stress does nothing good.

Protect Your Hair. Protective styles help retain hair length.

Disinfect Your Hair. Microbial infection in the scalp can weaken the hair follicles. This leads to damaged hair.

Apply essential oils. Oils like pumpkin seed oil have shown to increase hair count up to 40 percent.

Stay hydrated. Drinking water is good for your entire body.

End Note

Although, most of the factors that control hair growth are out of our control, if we focus on keeping hair healthy, we won’t have to cut off all of our growth. Remember that a lot about hair health has to do with the overall health of our body.
