Common Mistakes that Damage Hair

Keeping hair healthy, shiny and bouncy is a priority for many of us.
With all the washing, styling, heat tools, and handling that we do to our hair, it may be harder to maintain healthy hair. Even when we try to cut down on what damages our hair, many women still see split ends, breakage or dryness.
Here are some common mistakes that you might be making with our hair that can cause damage without us knowing:

1. Washing Every Day

Washing hair too often can strip your hair of its natural oils. These oils protect your hair, keep it healthy and shiny.

2. Using the Wrong Shampoo

The wrong shampoo for your hair type can dry out the hair and scalp, cause tangles, frizziness, and split ends. Sulfate-free shampoo or mild shampoos are a better choice for some hairtypes as they are more gentle on the hair.

3. Not Deep Conditioner Regularly

If your hair is dry, chemically processed, bleached, or dyed, skipping the regular deep conditioning treatment will do your hair no favors. Deep conditioning will keep your hair moisturized, healthy, shiny and reduce breakage/split ends.

4. Brushing When Wet

Wet hair is much weaker than dry hair. So trying to brush your hair or run a small toothed comb through your hair when its at its weakest can cause breakage and damage. Instead opt for a wide-toothed comb or your fingers to detangle your hair.

5. Towel Dry

Regular towels can cause frizz and all kinds of other damage. Instead opt for a cotton t-shirt or a microfiber towl, can make a huge difference. Also, its best to be gentle when trying your hair as it is weak when wet.

6. Hot Tools

Straighteners, curlers, and blow-dryers can all lead to severe damage when used too often or at a too high heat. Don’t just crank your heat tool to the highest setting. It’s best to start low and go higher if needed. Also, never use hot tools on wet hair! You may just end up burning your hair.

7. No Or Wrong Heat Protectant

Using a heat protector on your hair when styling will protect hair from heat damage. Heat protectants can also seal in shine, calms frizz, and keeps hair from becoming dry. Skipping a heat protectant is a huge mistake if you want healthy hair.

8. Too Many Chemical Processing

If you must chemically process (relax, perm, etc.) your hair, try and stretch out the treatments as much as possible. The more often that you do these processes, the greater the probability of breakage or damage.
