7 Simple Ways to Take Better Care of Yourself

Life can be very busy with family, work, studies, and all the other things that we have going on. A lot of us can get lost in our day-to-day and forget about ourselves. Whatever path in life that you are on, it is important to take care of your physical, mental and emotional self.

No matter who you are, self care is a necessity. As someone who neglected this many times in my life. When I started to focus on giving myself small moments in the day to focus on myself, my whole life outlook changed.

Here are some easy tips to self care that you can incorporate into your life:

  1. Take a break from social media.
Even if its for a few hours a day, taking a break from the constant of social media can really improve your mental state. A lot of us will open our social media apps every few hours, whenever we are bored, waiting for something, or anything else we would like to avoid. Being constantly bombarded with advertisements, perfect people, perfect images and perfect lives can be draining even if we don’t realize it. Redirecting your time into other activities like reading, writing, yoga, exercising, or taking a calming bath, can really help to improve your mood, energy level and life. You don’t have to completely give up social media but decreasing the amount of time a day that you are on it is important.
  2. Give yourself a break.
It’s important to not always be so hard on ourselves. Sometimes we fail or things don’t turn out as planned, but beating ourselves up over things when we did our best isn’t productive. Take a breathe, give yourself a break and try again.
  3. Find time for silence.
This one is a bit difficult for me, but find time to be in our own mind without constant noise and the rush of life. At first it might be overwhelming but finding time for silence can help you discover things about ourselves.
  4. Eat healthy.
Eating a healthy meal and nourishing your body is a simple practice that can improve your energy level, skin and overall health.
  5. Keep track of your mood.
Keeping track of how you feel on an app or journal is a great way to see the patterns of your mood over a longer period of time. Keeping track for a month or more can help you to see how you are experiencing life. You may not notice that 70% of the month you feel stressed/bad, or that you usually feel a certain way during a certain time of the month, but keeping track helps you to take a look at your moods. Eventually, you can pinpoint what causes the bad feelings or stress and find ways to improve our days leading to a happier, healthier life.
  6. Take a walk.
Walks can be a great way to get the blood flowing and have some personal time. Either you are listening to music or in silence, simple exercises like walking can help to decrease stress, become healthier, and more relaxed.
  7. Stay away from negativity.
Whether it’s the friend that gossips and bad talks everyone, or the everything is horrible Youtube videos, negativity can drag us down with it and lowers your vibration. Yes, not everything is roses but we can find ways to be an overall positive person without being naive. Be nice, be kind and spread all that is good.

Cleansing Oils for All Skin Types

Cleansing oils are great option when it comes to removing makeup, excel oils and dirt on the skin. Since cleansing oils are becoming more popular, there are plenty of formulas that target specific skin concerns such as acne, dryness, aging, dullness. This makes them suitable for all skin types. However, always be aware of the ingredients within the products to ensure it doesn’t contain ingredients that will irritate the skin.

Depending on what the product is designed to do, a cleansing oil can contain multiple kinds botanical of oils, extracts and vitamins.

How Do They Work?

Cleansing oils work as a solvent, they are naturally attracted to other oils, sebum, the oil-like ingredients of make-up. This causes the oils to dissolve what’s on your fact, leaving it soft and clean.

The Benefits

  • Cleaning oils easily remove makeup, sebum, sunscreens, dirt and other things that are on the surface of your skin.
  • They leave the skin soft and smooth.
  • There are different kinds of cleansing oils that can target whatever skin issue that you may have.
  • They do not leave the skin dry and tight feeling.
  • Cleansing oils are just as effective as water-based cleansers and are compatible with other cleansers allowing you to double cleanse.
  • Cleansing oils work as both a remover and a skin hydrator.

Who is a Cleansing Oil For?

Cleansing oils are suitable for all skin types. Products that are formulated to be rinsed off with water leaving the skin without the oily residue can work for everyone. When it comes to deciding if to use a cleansing oil, it just depends on your preference.

When searching for cleansing oils (and other skincare products) go for the ones that do not contain mineral oils and fragrance. These ingredients may irritate the skin, are not suitable for people with sensitive, acne-prone or redness-prone skin. Additionally, formulations that are only composed of a single oil or oil blend without emulsifiers or surfactants are not recommended for combination to oily skin. These formulations will increase the skin’s oiliness and be a complete mess for the skin.

How to Use

Cleansing oils can be used just like the water-based cleansers. They are most often rinse-able, but always check the directions for use on the packaging or website.

How to keep hair moisturized when straightened

Moisturizing hair when straightened without it reverting and turning into a frizzy mess can be tricky. There are ways that we can hair both frizz-free straighten hair and moisturized hair.

What to do

Moisturizing oils (grape seed, coconut oil, avocado oil, almond oil) are great for adding moisture and shine.

Products that have water lower on the list, or that are listed as moisturizing products without water,

Doing a deep conditioning treatment before doing the straightening process to ensure that your hair starts off with maximum moisture.

Wearing a silk scarf or sleep with a silk pillowcase at night. Cotton absorbs the moisture from your hair while silk doesn’t. Also it will reduce the frizz you experience.

Use a light amount of water-based creams. Although the cream is made with the very thing that causes hair to revert, there is a trick! Using a small amount of cream and then wrapping or pin-curling hair will keep it moisturized but not frizzy. Whenever I use this trick, my hair is actually very shiny and bouncy.

What to avoid

Stay away from heavy oils or excess amounts of creams, since they will weigh the hair down, make it look greasy and decrease the amount of time that your hair will hold the straight styles.

Avoid humidity. Anything that leads to re-straightening hair will lead to it becoming drier.

Too Much Moisture: How to tell and fix it

With curls, the main focus is to keep adding moisture in the hair. We are fixated, even obsessed with how to keep our hair hydrated 24/7. Since our hair lacks moisture, it seems alien to think that our hair can be overly moisturized. Many of us think that it isn’t possible… the too much moisture myth. Sadly, it’s true! Our hair needs a balanced moisture level (as if curly hair wasn’t tricky enough to take care of).

So then how do we tell if our hair has too much moisture in it? Why is it bad? How can we keep our levels balanced?

How to Tell

Did you know that too much moisture in the hair can cause it to be frizzy? There are some signs that your hair gives you when it has too much moisture.

  • Hair feels dry
  • Frizzy
  • Hair breaks but its very elastic
  • Mushy, gummy-feeling and limp
  • Can’t hold styles

What causes too much hydration?

There are a many practices that we do to keep our hair conditioned that have negative effects on our strands. These can include constant overnight conditioning, keeping on deep conditioning way too long, constant washing without letting the hair dry fully, and not using enough protein in the hair. Although, when we have the best intentions for our hair when we leave products on hours longer than the recommended time, these practices can be the reason why our hair isn’t flourishing.

So what can you do to balance your hair?

Find the right balance of moisture and protein for your hair. Create a hair regimen that incorporates both protein-based products and moisturizers, and alternate between the two within the month.

Limit the amount of time that your hair is consistently wet. So skip the overnight conditioning, leaving on products too long and the rewashing daily without letting the hair dry during the day. Additionally, close the hair cuticles by using products that are pH-balanced.

Budget friendly DIY deep conditioners that fight frizz

Routine deep conditioning is vital to keeping your curls healthy, soft and shiny, but it can get a bit expensive over time. The great thing is that there are budget friendly ingredients in your home that can be used  in creating your own effective deep conditioner.

These are the recipes that have shown me the best results:

#1 – Honey, Oils, and Keratin Conditioner.

Conditioner – I usually use a Keratin conditioner as the base since it gives me the smoothest results.
Oils – For best results mix vitamin E oil, avocado oil, coconut oil and olive oil.
Honey – Flower honey or organic honey is the best.

Leave on for 15 minutes with a plastic cap on so that the heat from your head can let the ingredients penetrate the hair. This deep conditioning recipe is perfect for super frizzy, dry hair since it is extremely moisturizing and the keratin will help smooth the hair.

#2 – Rose water, Vegetable Glycerin, Coconut milk

Coconut milk – is a great moisturizer for the hair, it also nourishes the hair with proteins.
Rose water – it helps to controls excess oil production. Rose water can help to reduce dandruff as well.
Vegetable Glycerin –  attracts moisture.
Vitamin E oil – vitamin E stimulates hair growth.

With this recipe or any with vegetable glycerin, it’s important to always dilute with an oil or it can cause hair to dry and break.  Leave on for 15 -20 minutes.

#3 – Avocado oil, Yogurt, Rice milk

Avocado oil – a great moisturizer, and has anti-inflammatory properties.
Yogurt – rich in protein it will strengthen your hair strands, and add shine.
Rice milk – Moisturizing to the hair.

Use a plastic cap to boost the process. Leave on for 10-15 minutes. Do not use to often is your hair is sensitive to protein.

7 Ways to Get The Most Defined Curls

Those of us with curly hair seem to be on a constant mission to getting those perfectly defined curls with right amount of volume without frizz. The trick to getting the perfect curls doesn’t just depend on the products but also the techniques that you use. Finding what works for your hair type can be a frustrating process but by implementing these techniques and tricks, it can make the process a whole lot easier.

7 Ways to Get The Most Defined Curls.png
Make sure your hair has a good amount of conditioner in it so that you get enough slip in the hair to reduce damage. I like to add olive oil, rose water and honey to my keratin infused conditioners for the super soft and defined results.

Right before you get out of the shower, just run cool water over your head to close those cuticle. This locks in the moisture, prevents frizz and makes the hair shiny.

It’s super important to keep the hair moisturized when looking to have super defined curls. Dry hair is frizzy hair. You can either invest in a good deep conditioning treatment or DIY it, either way hydrate those curls!

Gels can be a little scary since they don’t always mix with other products leaving your head covered in white flakes. Or just a little too much can leave you with crispy noodles. So if you’re like me and avoid gels, a good mousse will do the job. I found that opting for a mousse that is made specifically for curls provides the best results. Also, try to get water-soluble products rather than alcohol-based ones.

Scrunching hair when it is still damp will result in frizz.

Apply a mousse and twist small sections of your hair around your finger. This technique will create perfectly defined ringlets. The size of the section that you take will define how large the curl will turn out. Larger section for looser curls, and smaller for tighter curls.

For frizz-free curls using water-based products on wet hair gives best results. When the curls are completely dry, is when you should add the oil for more sheen or softness.
